2009 NNJR Solo Improvement, Suggestion & Recognition Thread

I think we can all agree that NNJR SCCA runs a terrific Solo program. We get more runs, more smoothly and consistently event-to-event, than all of the other clubs I've run with - probably in the double digits now.

This is 100% due to the terrific staff that runs NNJR - guys that give up their weekends consistently to make sure the program runs very smoothly. I'd like to recognize Ernie, Perry, Tony, Jeff, Tom, Don, Frank, Rob, Jeremy, and the rest of the crew that works behind (and in front of) the scenes to make sure everything runs well.

I'd like to start a (civilized) discussion to see if we can highlight some areas of opportunity for the club.

I think we can all agree that 2009 may be a trying year in terms of attendance for the Solo program - with the economy as it is, and many of our members' disposable income affected, we could see some issues with revenue. We may have to do more, with less. I can't imagine the lot rental fee is going down anytime soon.

Here are a few areas that I think we could improve on. What is going to make a difference IMO is appointing a single person responsibility for an area of opportunity and having follow-through from the overall event leader to make sure the job gets done. We have some members with strong management and leadership skills that are not tapped. These are the people we need to identify and recruit to help the events run even better and make sure there are future leaders for the club.

The list below and the ideas in it are just a starting point. I'm just looking to start a discussion.

1. Instructors - Some may disagree with me, but sitting in the Timing tent, I watched all season as lots of novices ran without instructors, or waited until they pulled up to the line to ask for one. Both slow the event tremendously. We need a stable of instructors at each event who are readily identifiable, available, and familiar to the novice crowd. Perhaps at the novice walk through, the instructors could be recognized.

2. Timing & Scoring - I think the club needs more people who are good with the equipment, software, and troubleshooting. Nothing major here, just more people with skills to fix the thing.

3. Attracting/Retaining New Members - Tim hit on it in a previous thread : we have a BIG area of opportunity here. I think fundamentally, the club could do more to RETAIN the novices. We have tons of people that come and go; that's the nature of the game. Where I think we could do better is to make more efforts to retain the people that we think will be a quality asset to the club. Guys like Tim Andriesen - already involved in his first year of the club. The drivers that haven't shown up yet are the future of NNJR.

Please post your thoughts concerning areas of opportunity for the club. I'm sure there will be plenty of ideas for improvement. If you feel I'm off base with my short list, please tell me too :)

Im looking to run my girlfriends focus in H stock instead of my s2000 in A stock or sm2 (was debating on depowering it but... tough chance haha) Her oem size is 205 50 16. could I get away with running staggered? Me co- driving of course.

225 50 16 in the rear and 205 50 16 r compunds up front instead?
I have a set of tires in those sizes I just got in a wheel trade which would be fun lol, probably selling to a rsx though.

also...
what I REALLY REALLY would like to know... could I run 205 45 16 hooiser a6's instead of the 205 50 16s thats come on it factory? is it also legal to maybe do a 225 50 16? im sure it probably wont rub but I could always throw some s2k tires on just to see.

also is there any svt mods or anything else you would do to make this a bigger H stock threat?

Hello Everyone. SJR & Philly Region have teamed up and put together a winter autox series utilizing two brand new lots! First up is the paddock area at the Lightning course at NJMP. While it is not the largest lot around, it is all new and very smooth asphalt, and it is almost 100% usable space. Next up will be the Citizen Bank Park's parking lot in Philly. This is a huge lot with a great surface, and promises courses that will be fast, and probably in the 60 second range. Dates are as follows:

Sunday, January 18, 2009 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville
Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia

I was inadvertantly hijacking TB's thread so I though I'd start on fresh.

With the economy the way it is, its reasonable to assume all motorsport participantion will be down next year. NNJ SCCA had a reason year this year after a loser the previous. Its important that the club makes money not only to ensure its ongoing longevity but also to be able to fund more activities. TB mention "towing" subsidies to nationals as an idea. Any ideas like this get much more traction when we have money in the bank rather than are hoping we do. Don't get me wrong, were not in bad shape but I'm just looking ahead. I haven't autoXed as much as many of you have of been around so let me ask:

How can we get novice drivers to come back?

How do we get the marginal particant to run more frequently?

How do we draw new drivers into the sport?

I personally believe we put on exceptionally good events with plenty of runs versus other groups. We generally run on time and with little drama. I don't think improving the quality of the event is the answer as it is already very high.

Here's my idea: Steak and Beans Contest

Team Captains: Don Slevin, Perry and Matt Doyal (top finishers in 2008)

Draft: Captains hold a draft and pick 4 additional NNJR members for their teams with Matt getting first pick, Perry second and Don third in the first round. Perry, Don, Matt order in second round. Don, Matt, Perry in third round. And Matt, Perry, Don order in Fourth and final round.

Scoring:
Pax ranking for each event will be used for points. Top Pax= 1 point, Second place = 2 points and so on.

Each team counts their top three team members for each event and adds their points together for that event score for their team. If a team can't field 3 drivers for an event then 30 points will be assigned to the missing drivers.

All 2009 events will be used with no drops.

All team members must have their scores used a minimum of two times, but the Captain must declare which two events are being used to meet this requirement prior to the the last two points events of the season.

The team with the lowest total points score at the end of the year gets a free BBQ steak dinner, paid for by the second and third place teams (for all participants), and prepared and served by the third place place team. Second place team gets to eat hamburgers. Third place gets to eat beans at the BBQ and has to clean up.

BBQ can be at my house, and I can keep track of points and standings.

What do you think?

Spec Miata just changed their spec tire from Toyo RA1's to Toyo R888s. There are a lot of Spec Miata racers with RA1 either used or new, laying around. The common tire size is 205/50/15. If someone is looking for decent, cheap rubber this might be an option, especially if your looking for something to play on the track with as well. The're not Kuhmos or Hoosiers but might be worth considering.

OK -so that was a cheater tag line but for a good reason...

NNJR is sponsoring a Teddy Bear Rally on Sunday, Dec 7th. This rally is about precision driving but in a very different way. No speed or hard launches involved here but it is a fun opportunity to do something in your car entirely different for a very good cause. The entry fee is a teddy bear which will be given to the Marines Toys For Tots program

Have a signficant other who has been at home Satudays while you're off autoxing? I'm actually trying to get my wife to navigate so she can have a bit of fun in the car too. This would be our only chance to beat the Matt & Kristin.....
